I remember playing Pirates a LOOOOOONG time ago on a friends Macintosh back in the mid/late '80s. What I didn't realize last night when I bought Sid Meier's Pirates! from D2D (for only $5) was that it was a remake of that old game.

As I started to play last night, it felt familiar. Sailing around as a ships captain, firing cannons and fighting other ship captains. Sure the graphics have been updated, and pretty well, I must say. But the core of the game that I used to love is definitely in there.

I'm looking forward to getting back to this one tonight.

how come you paid for it... pirates is freeware and available all over the web..great game tho
I just did a Google search, the Firaxis web site still has it on sale for $19.99. That being the case, the "freeware" versions are not legitimate. While that hasn't stopped me before, when a game is as reasonable at $5, there's no reason not to give the creator of a great game the cash.
oh right .. yea your right about game developers getting paid... but as the developers abandoned the software they wont be getting anything from your $5
But the publisher hasn't sent this one out to the abandonware pasture. They're still selling it on their web site. Hell, I've still seen it in the stores - so money is still going to the developers.
Ah - I think there's some confusion here - and I see what the issue is. I'm not playing the '87 version of the game, I'm playing the 2005 version.
i surpose why would you abandon a game thats making money....
oh no probs dude..... i wondered what was going on then lol....the 2005 version for $5... is a good deal tho
I may have to go find the old version and download it. I wonder how the gameplay holds up to what I remember.
its total abandonware.. so its readily available... was a good game... i love all the old Isometric Dos games...
